(When Unicron was created, the Matrix was also created as a fail-safe should Unicron become too powerful. Of course, Primacon never really thought the being would gain enough sentience to become the feared 'Chaos Bringer'. I theorize the Matrix wasn't even intended to become the 'Matrix of Leadership', but thus became such after Primacon granted a newly formed robotic society (The Transformers) to safe guard it if Unicron became dangerous. The Matrix Spark is part of the "All-Spark Matrix"...which existed before time itself, just like the Key To Vector Sigma. The All-Spark is to the Transformers what God is to us as a society; Primacon tapped into its raw power, and then used that to forge (what is now called) The Autobot Matrix of Leadership. ...eons of time passed & the Matrix of Leadership kept getting passed on as tradition set in, absorbing the leadership qualities of every robot it was 'encased' in.)
It is my theory that Primacon was indeed a spawn of 'Primus', or at least some counter part...both non-physical bodies of energy which existed (& still exist) in digital space. Which in-turn existed long before humankind tapped into it. It is possible that Primacon was in fact the "son" of Primus, but betrayed him. This would explain the creation of Unicron!; Primus created Cybertron & all it's inhabitants (before they segregated into Autobot or Decepticon) after he created Primacon. Afterwards, Primus thus became Cybertron's consciousness, leaving Primacon 'alone'. Primacon was a 'Cybertronian Jesus' of sorts...teaching the robots right from wrong & how to live. After a time, Primacon grew tired of these beings & jealous of his father's selflessness when he merged with his created planet...in a plot to destroy what his 'father' created, the enraged, envious Primacon created Unicron- the exact counter to Cybertron itself. Unfortunately for Primacon, his 'feelings' started to get the better of him and his plans to crush his father & his creation ceased. Unicron was complete, but so formidable that it was beyond destruction. Thus, Primacon sent Unicron adrift into the Universe...& far beyond his control. Later, Primacon theorized that the "All-Spark", which forged he & his 'father', could possibly be the one to destroy Unicron should he return to complete the mission he was created for.
He turned back to Cybertron, it's inhabitants now far superior then before. And bestowed the power of the Matrix onto his 'father', Cybertron itself now. Primus then passed it on to a Transformer to keep within himself should the ignorance of his 'son' cast its shadow on them. ...Over billions & billions of years, Unicron gained intelligence & a personality by eating Planets, moons, & even starts in other galaxies forgetting why he even did so or what his primary function was (Cybertron's Destruction). By the time Unicron was on his way back to Cybertron, Orion Pax had had the Matrix passed on to him by his creator, Alpha Trion, allowing him to become Optimus Prime, & the Great Wars had peaked when the Decepticons had finally taken control of Cybertron & drove most Autobots to outlying moons if they weren't already based on Autobot City back on Earth. Unfortunately, Primus was now far to dormant an entity to do anything about what was to happen to his planet....this was 'Transformers: The Movie'. The only beings who knew about Unicron and the counter attack of the Matrix were Primus, Primacon, & (amazingly enough) The Decepticon Shockwave who, in an earlier attempt, had halted Unicron for a brief time after he stole the Matrix out of Prime & used it when he realized unifying all Transformers world-wide against the goliath wouldn't work (Dreamwave Comics run)...of course, as we all know, Hot Rod later released the "Power of The Matrix" & Destroyed Unicron's physical body. ...his consciousness lived on however & Unicron even had enough power to create such deviant warriors as the Decepticon Trypticon who would even later form such descendants as the Predacon Tarantulas who played a pivotal role in the Beast Wars eons later.
