It's often said that the most intelligent person can also be the most childish. Allow me to expand on this a bit.
The three quotes above make me think of how far Transformers fans have come in the last two decades since the show's inception in 1984. By today's standards, most fans who watched those episodes consider it very inferior to the ones shown on Beast Wars.
But in the day, G1 was among the few shows to ever approach the robot genre with a high sense of street smarts combined with a whole lot of fun. The program was designed to sell the toys but some fans saw something more in it than Hasbro did. Sunbow Productions, Toei and a few other animation companies in Hong Kong and Korea did most of the bulk of the storytelling spooned out by various US writers such as Donald Glut whose credits harkened back to the early days of Television.
And for all that he or any other writer at that time were getting themselves into, fans who take all this stuff pretty seriously cannot fathom why they never were allowed to go even deeper. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to surmise that they had to remain within the confines of writing for kids and any inside adult material was at best minimal. Secondly, it would appear that folks like Don were probably pretty embarrassed to be writing (in their eyes) for such an "inferior" show. It's really not hard to understand this. But regardless they did the best they could at the time.
Now with the resurgence of 80's nostalgia Transformers are bigger than ever in comic books and cartoons. When the highly successful Beast Wars debuted the ones who watched the show felt validated by Larry Dittilio's impeccable job of maturing The Robots In Disguise to a higher level. There were little secret nods to them in a few episodes here and here which they ate up in droves. A little self gratification goes a long way as anyone will tell you.
However I really didn't appreciate the rather elite way it was carried out at the expense of people such as myself who were "lost" in this new highbrow thinking. It smacked of snobbery inside and out in one way or another. It pretty much set a precedence for the contingent to treat other fans with contempt for their lack of knowledge about everything Transformers related.
I certainly won't name names in this editorial but anyone who thinks they are as clever as Einstein should realize that they are only getting off on their own delusions of grandeur. It took me some time to understand that as a fan of this entity or any other like it does not in any way, shape or form give me the right to push my weight around like some "All Knowing God". I'd like to believe I'm trying my damndest to support what this community stands for. At the same time however I don't want to be lumped into a category that deems me unworthy for not knowing as much as other fans think I should.
I certainly won't stop anyone from being this way but I do caution them not to overemphasize their role in this fandom. I am well aware that the older fans will be getting a fan-derived toyline of their own in the future but don't expect any more preferential treatment because of this. Always remember that Hasbro or any animation corporation isn't doing what they are doing because of you. Nor are they doing it to spite you either.
You will eventually come to understand this in time. But for now enjoy your time in the sun because as all things go this won't last forever either.
