Fangwing's Author Interview by fangwing

Bill Heaston, aka Fangwing or Copperhead

fangwing2002@yahoo.com

4. Are you female or male?

Male

http://www.giantspace.net/fangwing

6. List the Transformers fanfics have you written.

The Zodiac Arc: Year of the Snake

The Zodiac Arc: Year of the Dragon

The Zodiac Arc: Year of the Cat

Robots In Disguise: Tragedy

Beast Machines: Legacy-- Shooting Stars

7. Which, of the Transformers fanfics you've written, is your favorite and why?

Year of the Dragon was the pinnacle of action for the Zodiac Arc thus far. I felt that I got my characters, and the borrowed characters I used, dead on, and was very pleased that my continuity can easily meld with anyone else's, should the need arise.

8. Which is your favorite Transformers fanfic written by someone else and why?

It's a tie: the first, the name escapes me, but the author was TL Arens, and it was a very unconventional plot revolving around a normal human girl who receives a sentient Optimus Prime action figure that helps her deal with her rape. (Lexicon Note: That would be "The Toy" and it's on Lexicon). Ms. Arens's writing was outstanding, and the tale made me cry more than once. The other must be Ms. Amy Cyrway's Shades of Grey Epic in all its parts.

9. What influences you to write Transformers fanfic the way you do?

The same thing that influences me to write the other fanfics I've done: I see things and get inspired, then sculpt the words to how they should appear.

10. What other Transformers fanfics writers write in a similar way to you?

Definitely Amy Cyrway and TL Arens. They're superb authors with a real feel for their characters, and a lot of the dialogue and concepts we share.

11. How much time do you usually spend writing Transformers fanfic?

How much time is there in a day? ;) As long as a fic needs to take to be finished, and then twice as long to perfect it.

12. What inspired you to write Transformers fanfic?

I've always wondered about the adventures beyond the TV screen or comic page or techspec cards, so I made them up.

13. What drew you to Transformers in particular?

Big, Giant Robots that turn into cars and trucks and crap.

14. Who is your favorite Generation 1 or Generation 2 Transformers character (fan-created or official) and why?

G1 Canon, gotta be Prime. G1 Fanfiction, Amy Cyrway's Cavalier. She's basically me in female Transformer form.

15. What do you like most about the official Generation 1 and Generation 2 canon?

The robots, like, duh.

16. Who is your favorite Beast Wars character (fan-created or official) and why?

Rhinox! Even though he turned villainous in Beast Machines, he always struck me as the friendliest Transformer in the world; someone you'd want to be friends with.

17. What do you like about the Beast Wars canon the most?

Beautiful storytelling. "Transmutate" makes me cry every time I see it; I cheer when Rhinox crashes the Autobot shuttle through the bridge of the Nemesis; I roll on the floor when Waspinator is blown to bits.

18. What do you like most about the Beast Machines canon?

Strika and Obsidian. It's very cool to see unknown celebrities of olden Cybertron.

19. Who is your favorite Beast Machines character (fan-created or official) and why?

Megatron. What made him good in Beast Wars was amped to about 500%.

20. What do you like most about the Robots in Disguise canon?

The humor. Towline cracks me up, and Sideburn's obsessions are nice light fare.

21. Who is your favorite Robots in Disguise character (fan-created or official) and why?

Skybyte. About the most subtle part of the show is Skybyte's poetry.

22. What parts of your Transformers fanfics are based on events in real life?

After the events of September 11, 2001, I wrote "RID: Tragedy", which a lot of people informed me was very touching, if somewhat fatalistic.

23. What would you like to change about the Transformers fanfics you've written?

Tweaks, really. I came up with an alternate origin for my main character Copperhead that I need to implement.

24. What do you consider to be a trite or overused theme in fanfics and why?

SNAD! I can't stand it. Starscream loves no one but himself.

25. Have you had any interesting feedback as a result of your Transformers fanfics?

I've got some friends for life from it, although indirectly. That's pretty interesting.

26. How much time do you spend online? What percentage of that time is devoted to Transformers?

I'm embarrassed to answer this one... I'm online most of the time because I really have nothing better to do. About half that time's spent in something Transformers related.

27. Which Transformers newsgroups do you use?

Select any that apply. alt.toys.transformers and that, rarely. I'm an Allsparker.

28. Have you any other comments to make about Transformers fanfic?

Embrace the characters over the action, people. It's a war, sure, but these characters were created to be human, or nearly. Treat them with the respect they deserve.
